ESSENTIAL OILS IN PRODUCTS

balsam copaiba (Copaifera officinalis) oil plant-derived Balsam Copaiba has a woody, spicy fragrance. It has anti-inflammatory properties and adds to the pleasant aroma of the cream.
basil (Ocimum basilicum) oil plant-derived Basil improves the quality and tone of the skin. Its aroma helps reduce tension and anxiety. Due to its implication in causing birth defects in babies, we do not recommend it be used during pregnancy.
bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) oil plant-derived Bay Laurel is one of the many essential oils used in our Cologne and After Shave Balm to create a unique fragrance. It has a sweet, fresh scent.
bergamot (Citrus bergamia) plant-derived Bergamot oil is extracted from the peel of the bergamot orange. It is cooling, refreshing and has a sweet, citrus smell. Its fragrance helps reduce stress and tension.
black pepper (Piper nigrum) oil plant-derived Seaweed Salt Scrub benefits from the inclusion of black pepper, which is a warming, tonifying oil. It stimulates the lymphatic and circulatory system, which encourages detoxification of the skin.
cardamom oil (Elettaria cardamomum) plant-derived Cardamom is a warming and restorative oil that is tonifying and calming on the nervous system. It also is beneficial for the digestive system. It has a sweet-spicy aromatic smell with a woody undertone.
cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) oil plant-derived Cedarwood is useful for dandruff and skin infections due to its regenerating and tonifying properties. It is also astringent and antiseptic, which benefits the skin. Cedarwood is in our Rosemary & Cedarwood Hair Treatment and some of our moisturisers.
chamomile, blue (Matricaria recutita) oil plant-derived See chamomile (Matricaria recutita) extract under "Herbs in Products"
chamomile, Roman (Anthemis nobilis) oil plant-derived Roman chamomile has the same properties as German or blue chamomile, however it has a milder, sweeter smell and a milder action. It therefore is suitable for use with infants and aging or convalescing people.
cistus (Cistus ladaniferus) oil plant-derived Cistus is in our Renew Spritzer. It is useful for improving the appearance of mature skin and wrinkles. It has a sweet, musky scent and it helps other fragrances in a blend to maintain their aroma.
citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) oil plant-derived Citronella has a sweet, lemony scent. Although it has many uses, its main one is as an insecticide for household pests. It has been clinically proven to repel mosquitoes, which is why it is the key ingredient in our Citronella Formula.
clary sage (Salvia sclarea) oil plant-derived Clary sage is a warming, toning oil that is beneficial for stress, tension and convalescence. In our Renew Spritzer it helps strengthen the mind and body. We also use it in Olive Leaf Moisturiser for its aroma and toning effect.
clove (Eugenia caryophyllus) oil plant-derived Clove is a warming oil with a woody, spicy smell. It is an effective antiseptic and antiviral oil that has a beneficial use in our Lemon & Coriander Deodorant for its ability to reduce the quantity of underarm bacteria.
coriander (Coriandrum sativum) oil plant-derived Coriander has a musky, spicy scent. It is used in our Lemon & Coriander Deodorant for its antiseptic value as well as its fresh aroma. It is also in our Palmarosa Face Wash and Palmarosa Body Wash.
cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) oil plant-derived Cypress has a fresh scent with a hint of smokiness. It is warming and soothing, helping to strengthen the nervous system. In cosmetic products, it helps to reduce skin secretions, thus it is beneficial for oily skin.
elemi oil (Canarium luzonicum) oil plant-derived Elemi oil, extracted from the gum of the tropical elemi tree, has a light, spicy smell. In our Palmarosa Facial Wash and Palmarosa Body Wash, it helps to tighten and tone the skin, as well as balance skin secretions.
eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) oil plant-derived Eucalyptus is a warming and drying oil with antiseptic and anti-fungal properties. It is an insect repellent so helps increase the effectiveness of our Citronella Formula. It is also stimulating and in our Detox Toning Oil it improves circulation.
eucalyptus smithii (Eucalyptus smithii) oil plant-derived Eucalyptus smithii is used in our Cologne for its soft, herby smell. It is similar to other species of eucalyptus but its aroma and properties are much milder. It therefore is suitable for people with sensitive skin.

galbanum (Ferula galbaniflua) oil plant-derived Galbanum is a resinous oil extracted from a flowering herb native to the Middle East. It has a fresh, woody scent that combines well pine. It tones the skin and is good for nervous tension.
garden mint (Mentha spicata) oil plant-derived A popular fragrance and flavouring, garden mint is mildly antiseptic and tonifying. Its uplifting smell stimulates a tired mind and relieves mental strain and fatigue. It is cooling and refreshing.
geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) oil plant-derived Geranium is a balancing oil that cools and moistens. It is also strengthening and uplifting. It has a strong, sweet, floral smell that combines well with orange, lemon and rose.
ginger (Zingiber officinale) oil plant-derived Ginger is a warming, stimulating oil that is useful for improving circulation and therefore the tone and appearance of the skin. In Ginger & Juniper Warming Oil, it combines with the other ingredients to relax the muscles.
gingermint (Mentha gracilis) oil plant-derived As its name suggests, gingermint’s fragrance is a combination of warming ginger and cooling mint. It is used in our Pumice Foot Scrub for its action of stimulating the circulation and relaxing the foot muscles.
grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) oil plant-derived Grapefruit has a fresh, citrus scent. It is very cleansing and antiseptic, with mildly astringent properties. This is useful for oily skin, open pores and acne. It will also help to tone and tighten loose skin.
helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum) oil plant-derived Helichrysum oil is extracted from flowers of the daisy family and it has an intensely sweet smell. In our Aloe Vera Cooling Spray, it helps reduce inflammation and skin irritation. It is well tolerated by even the most sensitive skin.
ho leaf (Cinnamonum camphora) oil plant-derived Ho leaf has a clean, sweet, floral-woody smell. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it beneficial for skin complaints. It gives Citrus Hand Wash and Pumice Foot Scrub a clean, uplifting aroma, as well as being gentle and soothing on the skin.
jasmine (Jasminum officinalis) absolute oil plant-derived Jasmine has a sweet, delicate aroma that blends well with most oils. It is balancing, with both refreshing and calming actions. It is excellent for dry or inflamed skin, which is why it is in our Jasmine Enriching Cream.
juniper (Juniperus communis) oil
juniper (Juniperus communis) extract		 plant-derived Juniper is a warming, stimulating oil that is refreshing and detoxifying. It improves the circulation of blood and lymph, thereby helping to reduce fluid retention and sluggish skin. It has a fresh, woody smell.
lavandin (Lavandula burnati) oil plant-derived Lavandin is a hybrid of lavender and has a similar aroma. Its oil has antiseptic and tonic properties that help maintain the health of the skin. Lavandin is in Lavender & Tea Tree Body Powder and some of our soaps.
lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) absolute plant-derived Lavender absolute is extracted using a solvent rather than heat distillation. Absolutes give more depth and longevity to a fragrance, thus we use lavender absolute in our After Shave Balm and Cologne so that these products hold their overall aroma.
lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) oil plant-derived Lavender oil has a fresh, floral aroma that works well in combination with other oils. It is useful for stress and tension, and it also soothes and restores the skin. It is very gentle and so can safely be used with infants.
lemon (Citrus limonum) oil plant-derived Lemon oil is zesty and uplifting, with antiseptic and toning properties. It is used in many of our products, particularly where a cleansing action is needed. Lemon is also particularly good for oily or aging skin.
lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) oil plant-derived Lemongrass has similar refreshing and antiseptic properties to lemon, but it is more warming. It has a sweet, lemony smell that is disliked by insects, thus it makes a good insect repellant. It is also toning on skin and muscles.
lime (Citrus aurantifolia) oil plant-derived Lime oil has similar properties to lemon oil. It is very uplifting and refreshing and it blends well with other citrus oils. It is used in our Lemon & Coriander Deodorant to add to its zesty, refreshing action.
litsea (Litsea cubeba) oil plant-derived Litsea is extracted from the fruits of the tropical litsea tree. It has a mild, citrus smell and its actions are antiseptic, deodorant and insecticidal. It is very soothing and is particularly useful for treating oily skin.
mandarin (Citrus reticulata) oil plant-derived Mandarin has a sweet, floral, citrus scent. It is very detoxifying, helping to reduce cellulite and water retention. It also helps to prevent or reduce stretch marks, and to tone loose skin. Its aroma helps to calm the mind.
marjoram, Spanish (Thymus mastichina) oil plant-derived Spanish marjoram is in our Aromatic Foaming Bath and Aromatic Massage Oil for its warming and relaxing properties. By dilating arteries, it increases circulation and can reduce the severity of aches and pains. It has a warm, spicy smell.
melissa (Melissa officinalis) oil Lemon Balm; Balm plant-derived Melissa oil has a sweet fragrance with a mild lemon scent. The yield of oil is very small, which makes it expensive. It is calming, yet strengthening, and its anti-inflammatory action makes it useful in skin care.
myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) oil plant-derived See myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) extract under "Herbs in Products"
neroli (Citrus aurantium) oil plant-derived Neroli is extracted from the flowers of the bitter orange tree. It is excellent for improving skin tone, especially in mature skin. It is also beneficial for reducing or preventing stretch marks. Its aroma is both uplifting and calming.
niaouli (Melaleuca viridiflora) oil plant-derived Niaouli is in the same family as Tea Tree and has a similar camphor-type smell that is stimulating. It is used in our Zest Spritzer, where it helps to boost energy and tone the skin.
olibanum (Boswellia carteri) oil plant-derived Olibanum, which is also known as frankincense, is a tonifying oil that has anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. It is a key ingredient for improving skin tone, decreasing wrinkles, and improving scar tissue. It has a sweet, spicy, fresh aroma.
orange, sweet (Citrus sinensis) oil plant-derived Sweet orange has a sweet, fresh, fruity smell. It combines well with geranium to provide a balancing, zesty, aromatic combination. It is useful for treating a sluggish system and therefore helps detoxify and improve the health of the skin.
palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii) oil plant-derived Palmarosa is a cooling, tonifying oil with skin-regenerating properties. It helps to hydrate dry skin and balance sebum secretions of oily skin, which makes it a key ingredient in our face and body wash and our Wild Rose Beauty Balm.
patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) oil plant-derived Patchouli oil has a dry, woody, musky aroma that is strengthening and stimulating. It is an anti-viral and anti-bacterial oil, with skin-regenerating actions such as improving scar tissue and stretch marks or reducing oily skin.
petitgrain (Citrus aurantium) oil plant-derived Petitgrain oil is distilled from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree. It has a sweet, citrus smell with a mild woodiness that is uplifting. In our hand creams it adds to the overall aroma of the products.
pine (Pinus sylvestris) oil plant-derived Pine oil is fresh and sweet and has a stimulating, refreshing action. It helps to reduce muscular aches and pains as it increases circulation and thus is warming.
ravensara (Ravensara aromatica) oil plant-derived Ravensara is extracted from the leafy twigs of an evergreen tree native to Madagascar. It is warming and stimulating and has an antimicrobial action. It is very cleansing, with a camphoraceous, disinfectant-type smell.
rose (Rosa centifolia) absolute plant-derived Rose oil, from the steam distillation of rose petals, is very expensive. Rose absolute, produced using solvent extraction, is a cheaper alternative. It has the same properties and aroma as rose oil and gives more depth to a fragrance blend.

rose (Rosa damascena) wax plant-derived Rose wax is derived from the extraction process when rose absolute is made. It is a waxy substance that we use in Rose Body Cream to help give it a smooth, satiny feel.

sage, Spanish (Salvia lavandulaefolia) oil plant-derived Spanish sage is a stimulating oil used in our Lemon & Coriander Deodorant, Nettle & Sage Shampoo and Ginger & Juniper Warming Oil. It has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties, as well as stimulating the circulation. These actions benefit the skin and scalp.
sandalwood (Santalum album) oil plant-derived Sandalwood has a sweet, woody fragrance and benefits dry skin. It is a fixative, helping products maintain their overall fragrance. As sandalwood is now endangered due to over-harvesting, we are reformulating our products to avoid using this precious oil.
spearmint (Mentha spicata) oil plant-derived see 'garden mint'
tagetes (Tagetes erecta) oil plant-derived Tagetes is a type of marigold, though its properties differ from those of Calendula officinalis. The oil is orange, which gives colour to our Calendula Soap and Calendula Shampoo. Its anti-microbial properties contribute to the cleansing action of these products.
tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) oil plant-derived Tea tree is a strong anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory oil that has many applications in skin care. It disinfects without being harsh and so is useful for cleansing broken skin. It has a warm, spicy, camphoraceous smell that is very stimulating.
thyme, linalol (Thymus vulgaris CT linalol) oil plant-derived Thyme ‘linalol’ oil has similar properties to common thyme(Thymus vulgaris) but it is much more mild. It therefore is suitable for children. We use it in our Citronella Formula as it is effective against insects and germs.
vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) oil plant-derived Vetiver oil is extracted from the rootlets of a native Indian grass. It has a sweet, heavy smell with an earthy undertone. It has both a sedating and strengthening effect, which makes it uplifting on the nervous system.
violet (Violoa odorata) absolute plant-derived Violet absolute is produced by solvent extraction due to the delicate structure of the flowers that cannot stand steam distillation. In skin care it can help to refine the pores and improve the appearance of thread veins.
yarrow (Achillea millefolium) oil plant-derived See yarrow (Achillea millefolium) extract under "Herbs in Products".
ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) oil plant-derived Ylang Ylang has an intensely sweet, floral scent. It is a soothing oil that helps to create a sense of well-being. Its application in skin care is to balance both dry and oily skin.
